About Coach Izzy
Hello! I am Isidro “Izzy” Balasang (he/him). I am transgender going on 2 years on HRT, and I enjoy the following:
decolonizing the mainstream fitness environment
Picking heavy things up and putting them down (I compete in both IATBP and USPA federations)
Saying just one more cast (competitive angling)
Aiming high and shooting straight (amateur Glock Sport Shooting Foundation participant)
Outside of coaching, I work remotely as an instructor for a graduate certificate program. I am a former high school, special education teacher, and I was in that field for 12 years. I am a corgi dad, and I am getting my fur child trained to be a therapy dog.
My Philosophy
First and foremost, fitness spaces should be safe learning environments.
To me, that means:
Programming that aligns with each individual’s goals and needs
Trauma-informed coaching practices
Positive, affirming communication
Prioritizing function, health, and well-being over appearance
As a result, the following have no place in my coaching practice:
“No pain, no gain” mentalities
Toxic or shaming language
Restrictive dieting approaches
Appearance-based fitness goals
Social media comparison culture
Exclusionary practices
My coaching style is calm, collaborative, and holistic. The guidance I provide is rooted in evidence-based practices and informed by reputable organizations such as the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM) and Fitness for All Bodies.
I bring more than 10 years of strength and conditioning coaching experience to my work. I was certified through the World Instructor Training Schools (W.I.T.S.) from 2011–2022 and currently hold personal training and nutrition coaching certifications through NASM.
